When someone you love is arrested, one of the first questions is simple: how much does bail cost? The answer depends on the bail amount the court sets and the bail bond premium filed for the surety company. Use the calculator below for a quick estimate, then call a licensed Alana’s Bail Bonds agent at 619-468-9333 to confirm your exact cost — 24 hours a day, in English or Spanish.

How much does bail cost in California?
In California, the court or the county bail schedule sets the bail amount. You can pay the full amount to the court in cash, or you can work with a licensed bail agent who posts a bail bond for you. With a bail bond, you pay a premium — the fee for the bond — instead of the full bail amount.
Bail bond premiums in California are regulated. Each surety company files its rates with the California Department of Insurance, and licensed bail agents must charge the filed rate. The standard premium is generally 10% of the bail amount. For example, on a $20,000 bail, the standard premium would be about $2,000.
What affects the final price?
- The bail amount. The premium is calculated from the amount the court sets.
- Eligibility for a reduced rate. A lower rate may be available only when the surety’s filed rate schedule allows it and you provide timely documentation of eligibility (for example, private attorney representation, union membership, or military service, where the filed schedule permits).
- Payment arrangements. Payment plans and low down payments may be available after review, but they are not automatic and must be set out in a signed written agreement.
- Necessary expenses. Beyond the filed premium, only actual, necessary expenses permitted by law may apply. We do not add hidden fees.
Is the premium refundable?
The premium is earned once the defendant is released, so it is generally non-refundable — even if the case is later dismissed. Limited exceptions apply under California Code of Regulations, Title 10, § 2090, and any refund may be reduced by permitted administrative costs. Collateral, if any was required, is a separate matter and is returned under the terms of your agreement once the bond is exonerated.
Do you have a minimum bail amount?
Yes. We typically do not post bonds for bail amounts under $2,500, unless the bond is posted in conjunction with another bond. Minimums vary from county to county, so call 619-468-9333 for details and the minimum that applies in your county.
